Ascent Trip ReportRound trip - 4 hours
Mt Waumbek just barely is one of the NH 48 4000 footers at 4006 feet, but it provides a great fall hike with views of the Northern Presidentials. We will rate this as a moderate to difficult hike - 2500 feet in elevation gain and a round trip of 7.2 miles. We will use the Starr King trail to summit and return to the parking area.
The trail begins on Starr King road, a gravel road to the north side of route 2 - just .2 miles from the junction with NH 115A. There may be room in a parking lot shortly up this road or across the street on Route 2 in the town of Jefferson, NH.The trail starts off on an old logging road. At .4 miles it ascends the broad southwest ridge of the mountain. It reaches the summit of Starr King mountain at 2.6 miles then continues on to the wooded summit of Waumbek after another mile. You should be in good hiking shape and ready for possible late Fall conditions. Or, it will just be a perfectly dry day as most hikes are in the Fall.Read more
