Ascent Trip ReportDirections from I-5: Take Hwy 58 past Odell Lake, take right on Crescent Lake Hwy (NFS road 60), after crossing RR tracks turn right (still NFS 60), proceed to west side of Crescent Lake and turn (about 160 degrees) to the right onto NFS road 6010 to Summit Lake. If NFS 60 turns to gravel, you've gone too far. NFS 6010 was an extremely rough road (boulders, water-gouging, branches) and is recommended only for vehicles with light-duty off-roading capabilities. Proceed 6.5 to 7 miles on NFS 6010 to (Emmigrant Pass?) trailhead. We had to walk along the road about a third of a mile due to a section of road that looked too dubious for my vehicle.
The hike is 4-6 miles on the PCT, about 1 mile on climbers' trails, then about another half mile along a ridgeline to the main summit. The climber's trail was marked by a rock cairn on the left of the PCT, and rapidly climbs about 2000'. There was at least two climbers' trails, as we descended via a different route than we asceneded; both were marked and fairly easy to follow, though the farther NE of the two was even steeper than the other. After detaching from the PCT, the route was increasingly dominated by scree, with the ridgline and summit area being nearly exclusively so, interrupted with a few large outcroppings.
