Ascent Trip Report

Short moderately steep hike from Skyline Drive, my second visit to this beautiful mountain. I first took a detour to this summit while nb on the AT (se TR dated 2007-08-12).

My wife Rose and I are driving South on the Skyline Drive so that I can relive and show her some of the highlights of my AT thru hike of 2007. From Hawksbill Gap parking (mile 45.6) it's a short moderately steep climb to the summit via the Lower Hawksbill Trail .....awesome views from the stone platform, a stone Byrds Nest #2 shelter, a man was operating his "radio controlled Glider", a popular destination for hikers.
Once back down to the Parkway we went over to the AT for a short hike on memory lane, followed by lunch at Skyland Restaurant a few mile north of here (I did the same during my AT hike)..... a beautiful open area, very touristy.
We met a New brunswick couple on one of the overlooks with a super homemade 3 wheel sports buggy complete with a trailor, awesome futuristic looking machine, red in color, one powerful engine.

We left the Shenandoah and drove South to the Blue Ridge Parkway via I81, stopping at a number of places for information. Ended up at the Otter Creek State campground, BRP mile 61, North of Roanoke.
