Ascent Trip Report

I attempted to bag both Crestone Needle and Humboldt Peak by running from the 2WD TH. I left the TH at roughly 6 am (MDT)under cloudy skies. Minimal recent snow lay on the ground, but no new snow fell. However, I climbed into the clouds/mist at about 12,000 ft. on Broken Hand Pass, and encountered rocks increasingly coated with ice from there on. Consequently, I abandoned the attempt on the Needle at approx. 13,300 ft. After returning to the lake, I made it to the summit of Humboldt in about 2 hours, traversing small amounts of snow and fighting winds which gusted to 40 mph on the way. As I neared the summit, the cloud cover finally began to lift, allowing nice views of the Crestones and the valley below. The only other people I saw all day were two hikers heading up the road when I was about a mile from the TH on the way back. It was a cold day, especially on the west ridge of Humboldt, and missing the Needle was a disappointment, but it was still a satisfying trip, with one 14er (my 24th) successfully bagged. 12.5 hours, 19 miles RT, 6,700 ft. vertical.
