Ascent Trip ReportWe camped at Thorndike Campground over Labor Day, and did this hike under the full moon. It was sublime. We left around 8 pm, and got back about 5 am. The temps were chilly and the wind was probably gusting around 20 kt. We reached the top around 12.40, with Death Valley socked in pretty good by smoke from the Station fire in LA. A member of the party got altitude sickness issues that slowed the descent, which worked out for the rest of us because a front came through and blew the smoke out of both valleys, and we were treated to high cirrus clouds, a moondog, and the most distinct star colors I've ever seen. Venus rose yellow just as we were rounding Rogers Pk. Truly a magical hike. With a little more challenge, it would have been perfect.
