Ascent Trip Report

There is a lot of posted property around Indian Grave Mountain. I finally gave up searching for access to the highest point in Pike County by myself and stopped to ask someone who looked friendly. They directed me to a new housing development called "The Ridge" found at 32.97572 N 84.34736 W. I was able to drive to within just .25 miles from the summit, which ended at a posted metal gate in front of a very nice home. I knocked on the door to explain my presences, but no one was home except a loud barking indoor dog. I decided to make a dash for the highpoint by bushwhacking and avoided the posted gate, but soon I intersected a dirt road and I followed it all the way to the highpoint where there were great views to the east and west. I reached the summit in just 6 minutes and found benchmark No. 1. Of course, I felt uncomfortable being on posted property, so I made a quick descent, but on the way I found the main summit benchmark still in a monument which had obviously been removed by heavy equipment. There were several roads being built and it appeared to me that the entire summit area would be a new housing project someday. I reached my car again in just 4 minutes, because I ran part of the way and I followed the road this time all the way to the posted gate. I was relieved to reach my car, but soon after I got there a lady drove up to the house I was parked in front of. I got out of my car to explain my presence, but the lady just drove right past me. I was worried she might be hurrying to her house to call someone to check on me, so I sped out of the area as fast as I could safely travel. I felt lucky to check this county highpoint off my bucket list. If it is on your list, I recommend you visit it soon. The new subdivision could someday become a gated community and then I have no idea how you would be able to access this area.
