Ascent Trip Report

Beautful day in New Hampshire, perfect weather for climbing. We started from Pinkham's Notch down Tuckerman Ravine around 10:30a looking to take Huntington Ravine to the top (via Alpine Garden/Lion's Head), which we had heard was the hardest hiking trail in the northeast.

Huntington Ravine was absolutely beautiful, if a little muddy from the rain the day before, with river crossings and awesome scrambling/semi-rock climbing. It's no joke though; it's very strenuous (do yourself a favor and do some walking lunges or split squats a few days before you go), but not nearly as tough as we had imagined. (Yeah, we're tough.) Jerry tried some free climbing on the rock faces near that part of the trail where you basically go straight up the rock wall, but figured it would be too dangerous to go all the way up that way.

Once up on top of the rock wall, we took Alpine Garden across to the Lion's Head. Not nearly as fun or cool as Huntington, our knees and ankles got tired of those trail rocks real quick. They only got bigger as we made our way to the summit, which was much further away from the end of Huntington Ravine than either of us imagined.

The top of the mountain was a great feeling, even with all the joker tourists who took the apparently really tough ride to the top.* In fact, we were even greatful that there were so many amenities at the top of the mountain because we needed some water and they actually make a pretty decent bowl of chili at the snack bar up there.

We took Tuckerman Ravine all the way down, taking some time to stop and take in some seriously beautiful views of the mountain. We made it back to the car just as it was starting to get dark; another state high point successfully bagged.

* Seriously, there was a shirt in the gift shop (ugh) that you could buy proclaiming to the world that you accomplished "The Ride to the Top"
