Ascent Trip Report

Did a counter clockwise loop from the visitors center in the Thousand Palms Oasis in Coachella Valley on the McCallum and Moon Country Trails. Took side trips to the McCallum and Willis Palm Groves. The McCallum Grove and Oasis was very beautiful with lots of water and many majestic palm trees with benches in shady areas. The Fan Palm trees in the Willis Grove had been through a fire. The skirts were completely gone, and the trunks were black, but it made a very stark contrast to the green scenery and provided a very dramatic look. Fan Palms are the only native Palm in California and can grow to 60 feet with leaves over 6 feet wide. Some are up to 150 years old. The Preserve sits on the San Andreas Fault, and water in the McCallum Pond comes from a natural earthquake seep.

There was a large cairn on the summit, but we didn't find a register or benchmark. Views were superb, with green hills and lots of snow. Flowers starting to bloom on the summit.

We were very happily surprised to find an amazing display of wildflowers blooming. Excellent trail once we were out of the wash. Trail brought us out on the road and we had a mile + walk back to car.

Flowers included pink Verbena and Locoweed, yellow and white asters, yellow Poppies, purple and lavender Lupine and Phacella, gold and white Daisies, several kinds of white flowers(?), tiny pink, white and yellow ground cover flowers and yellow Creosote starting to bloom in the washes. Barrel Cactus had big buds and will be blooming soon.

It was a lovely hike on a beautiful day with some nice cloud cover.
