Ascent Trip ReportWell, to say this outing was a challenge would be an understatement. In order to mix things up a bit, we decided to canoe from the south end of Lake Placid some 3 miles to Whiteface Landing, where we tied off our canoe and began the 3.5 mile hike to the summit. The canoe ride brought out some unrealized anxiety over being in a small canoe in the middle of what seemed like a big lake. But, I survived. My partner, of course, had no anxiety whatsoever, which helped even out my own.
The canoe ride to Whiteface landing took about an hour. The hike to the summit was another 3 hours 45 minutes. The ascent was a challenge, with a fairly steady grade that was quite draining after a while. Yet, the views from the top were beautiful, as were the cheeseburgers in the restaurant at the summit. (It's the only high peak with a road leading up to the summit.) The descent only took 2 hours 30 minutes. The canoe trip back was bit more challenging. The wind picked up and it seemed like a storm might be on the way. It seemed like we'd never get back to the docks. But we both made it long before the storm hit. All in all, a decent trip.
