Ascent Trip Report

Began hike at Deer Springs Trailhead, on Friday morning, across street from Nature Center on HWY 243, at 6:30 AM. Reached Little Round Valley at 2:30 PM and spent the night there at Owl's Hootch campsite. Last 1 mile up steep switchbacks from junction with Fuller Ridge Trail to Valley was very tough due to effects of altitude and fatigue. We met no other party on this first day of hiking.

Resumed hike the next day at 7:30 AM up a fairly gentle switchback trail and reached the summit at 9:30 AM. Final 40 vertical feet or so was an unexpected, but not difficult, scramble up rocks to the peak. Fairly hazy conditions, we could just make out a faint shoreline of the Salton Sea to the south and could barely see Mt. San Antonio to the west. Fairly clear view down to desert.

Began our descent at 10:30 AM down the trail on the east side of the mountain and encountered many groups of hikers making their way up from the Palm Springs Tramway. Once past Wellman Divide we encountered only an occaisonal hiker on the way down to Saddle Junction. We reached Humber Park via the Devil's Slide Trail at 3:30 PM. Overall a very good experience.
