Ascent Trip Report

This was at the end of a travelling day following yesterday's Mulhacen ascent. Bob Packard was with me, but time was short, and he already has too many P610m summits! so I made a quick solo ascent.

We had no maps other than a 1:400,000 Michelin map and a few Googlemaps page showing some tracks. We took a while to find the correct road out of Casarabonela village (an un-signed back street, fork R at N36:47.32, W4:50.435, last feasible turning before reaching the tiny village square). The road (MA-445 on Michelin map, MA-5401 on the ground) crosses the N end of the ridge and at this point (N36:48.436, W4:50.962), almost opposite a building is a signboard with a detailed map (10m contours) and a track L (for cycles but a driveable dirt road with no restrictions). A drive of approx 5 km leads to a pull-in (N36:46.645, W4:52.375) below the SE face of the peak, with a signpost indicating a trail leading NW. This leads to a saddle, then crosses the NE face to reach the E ridge. It descends slightly then climbs R, zigzags then heads for the summit, a little indistinct in places, with a few cairns.

On arrival there are 2 summits close together, one (NE) with an old trig base and another (SE) with an intact trig pillar (standard cylindrical design). However a third (W) summit appears higher and the map shows it to be 1521 with the E summit 1518; my GPS readings tended to support this. My GPSr at the W summit read N36:46.130, W4:52.862, elevation 1523m.

It's a nice compact summit, rocky with good views; Torrecilla is prominent (in both senses) to the SW.

DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS IN SHORTS! The trail is lined with prickly plants: gorse and thistles.

We were based near Malaga as we were flying to our respective homes the next day having spent a week in Spain.
