Ascent Trip Report

Rose and I came here having read all of the TRs, hoping to get the same positive reception that Scott Surgent, Bob martin, Andy Martin and Ken Akerman received in 2001 ( see their respective TR of 2001) - it would not be the case, it was more like (but not quite) Andy Martin's experience of 2000. The Ranch Manager at the ranch house off of Hwy #17 was distant and not the helpful type - polite but more like "why are you bothering me". I think that Rose's presence tempered his demeanor.

He did refer me to the ranch owners, a corporation of sorts, McCOY REMME RANCHES LTD. SAN MARCOS TX. He also told me that high clearance is required to drive to the Hernandez Windmill "You can't go there with that." pointing to my dodge caravan.

I should also add/update Andy Martin's contact info in his TR of 2000. Prior to this visit I called Emmett McCoy, 6001 Lime Kiln Rd, San Marcos, TX. 78666. tel# 512-353-8771. A Mrs McCoy answered and said to call her son Brian McCoy. tel# 512-353-6400 (I called twice with no answer and no call-back).
I'll work on the permission issue when I get home.

UPDATE 2017-06-21.
We got home from our 87 Day "Winter Trip 2107 County High Pointing Texas" on March 24, having successfully completed 231 of the 254 Counties. We immediately started contacting the remaining 23 counties by either going directly to the landowners or the County Appraisal District office for landowner information.
In the case of Reeves County I had to sent-out 3 letters to different addresses for McCoy Remme Ranches Ltd. San Marcos and 1 letter to the Reeves County Appraisal District (no answer), finally receiving a phone call on June 20 from Dan Mitchell of McCoy Remme Ranch saying "......I wanted to call you personally ...... we received your letters asking for permission ........., we do not allow access to the ranch ............"
Time has a way of changing things, today's people don't seem to be hiker friendly, also the ranch appears to have a large turnover of managers.
I have put this county in the "NOT ACCESSIBLE" category.

NB: DEAR FELLOW COUNTY HIGHPOINTERS.
Should you succeed in getting access to this HP it would be greatly appreciated if you include me in your party. With enough notice I would do my best to be there.

"REEVES COUNTY IS NAMED AFTER GEORGE R. REEVES, A TEXAS STATE LEGISLATOR AND A COLONEL IN THE CONFEDERATE ARMY. AS OF THE 2010 SENSUS IT HAD A POPULATION OF 13,783 WITH ITS COUNTY SEAT IN PECOS."
