Ascent Trip ReportA tough day out in excellent conditions. We started at 7.45am which is really not early enough (5.30 is recommended). Consequently we were last on the hill, although we overtook several parties in the course of the day. Overall the route is well waymarked with "Austrian flag" red-white-red markings and would be nearlz impossible to miss.
The hill is really steep on all sides and a brilliant climb. The initial hour was spent sweating up to the first ferrata section which is well equipped with wires but quite an easy grade (no need for self belay kit). There is some stonefall danger from parties above (and from some chamois which were literally running up a ludicrously steep gully above us). One should keep moving and cross the main gully with care.
Above we crossed a hanging corrie over scree slopes from left to right expecting (from the map) to find another ferrata-protected section. Instead ew found a 400m long (in height) scramble which, while never particularly exposed or difficult, was quite sustained with several sections where a fall would have had serious consequences. Not a route to be done on a wet day for sure. At the very top was a single cable bizarrely protecting the final section to the summit plateau which was technically much easier than several of the unprotected sections below (although arguably slightly more exposed). The final few hundred meters went past an emergency bivouac hut over grassy slopes to the summit.
The view was outstanding. THe peak is extremely steep on all sides with no walking route up. The Ankogel was prominent in the view south and the Salzkammergut to the nort. The view of the Dachstein from end on was not so good but it didn't matter. After a nice lunch we descended the same way in to the heat of the afternoon, all the while wishing we'd started earlier. A dip in the cool (19C) Hallstaettersee was just what we needed to cool off. One hour later an almighty thunder and lightning show hit the town with a bang, snapping trees, closing the Koppenpass for 2 days and leaving us very very grateful it hadn't hit 3 or 4 hours earlier. A cold beer in the comfort of our lakeside rental cottage was the prefect end to an amazing day.
