Ascent Trip ReportAfter catching the second cable car of the day up from Ebensee to the Feuerkogel, we hiked via paths 820 and 833 to the foot of the Grosser Höllkogel. THe route goes gently downhill at first before climbing to a little col. Thereafter there is a slow ascent to the Totengrabengupf (1782m) although the path does not directly reach the summit. A steepish rocky descent takes you back down to the foot of the peak at about 1635m before the final pull up to the dwarf-pine covered summit. The return route can be varied by going over the Alberfeldkogel with an excellent view to the North that one doesn´t get from the Höllkogel.
Be warned that the terrain is extremely rough underfoot, more rubble than path in places. Although it looks like only a 300m height difference between cable car and summit with relatively flat terrain in between, this is misleading and we reckoned we did close to 3 times that amount, including the return.
The views were superb, looking south over the Salzkammergut to the Hoher Dachstein. The view of the Traunstein over the Traunsee was also impressive. Lunch and beer in the Christophoros Hütte was also excellent(and amazingly cheap).
