Ascent Trip Report

Today is the 5th day of our 87 day "WINTER TRIP 2017, COUNTY HIGH POINTING TEXAS".

This TR covers all of today's activities on route to Texas. After overnighting at Waverly we drove west to our first hike of the day.

From Camden, JCT #641/70, we drove 70 west for 3 miles to a right turn on Sandy Point Lane, Baptist Church on corner. We zeroed our odo.
0.00M ... left #70 northbound on Sandy Point Road.
0.68M ... turned right on Sandy Point Lane
0.87M ... turned right (east) on Mt Carmel Road followed by an immediate left on Firetower Road. Straight east heads .2M to the Patsy Cline Memorial Crash Site.
1.55M ... arrived at the Lookout Tower, MB #625 on the left - capped with a Lookout Tower, Communication Tower and Tennessee Forestry Buildings. The bottom stairs of the Tower have been removed. I looked-for/didn't find a BM.
On the way out we visited the Patsy Cline Crash Site, before continuing north to our next hike. From Camden we took 641 north to Paris.

HENRY COUNTY HIGH POINT, TN. -- visit to 4 areas
We used Andy Martin and Tom Owen TRs as our source of information.
00.0M ... in Paris, JCT #641/54, we zeroed our odo and traveled north on 641.
3.79M ... turned right on Vaughn Road just past stop light.
4.41M ... T-JCT turned left on Old Paris Murray Road.
7.39M ... Main Intersection of Old Paris Murray Road/Jim Merrill Road. This is the starting point for the driving directions to different areas. We zeroed our odo here.

AREA 1 (36.40629,-88.28339) ... woods road walk, .9 miles, 18 minutes RT.
I approached from the east following Andy's directions. I ignored Tom's west approach as per his recommendation.
0.00M ... we drove east on Jim Merrill Road.
1.92M ... T-JCT turned left (north) on Shady Grove Road.
3.35M ... turned left on the small Vickery Road, Andy's "fish Hook road".
3.85M ... gated woods road on the left parked here, this was my TH The "fish hook" is just ahead.
I walked the road west 450 yards where I stayed right at a T-JCT, then another 250 yards to the HP, going through another locked gate at 50 yards before. The HP is obvious at an E-W clearance with a line of stored farm implements. Nice pine forest all around. Tom's road approach is visible to the west.
Tom's experience had me spooked so I didn't take time to smell the roses, got out of there PDQ. There are no posted signs on this route.
We backtracked to the Main Intersection and re-zeroed our odo.

0.00M ... left north bound on Old Paris Murray Road.
0.25M ... AREA 4 (36.38619,-88.29748), west of road at 125 yards, obvious just inside woods. Shankle Road is just ahead.
1.49M ... NELSON LOOKOUT TOWER on the left at 30 yards, the fenced-in (no access) Tower is amid a patch of woods.
2.05M ... AREA 2 (36.41036,-88.29767) immediately left of the road over the fence.
2.36M ... AREA 3 driveway on the left MB #7521. The driveway heads 350 yards west to the new house right on the nice/obvious summit. As I stepped out to go to the house a huge menacing black dog came out of the back yard. We forgot about the house.
If driving south from the north it is 1.8 miles to Hwy #140.
We moved on to Calloway County High point, KY.

CALLOWAY COUNTY HIGH POINT, KY. -- visit to 3 areas.
There 3 candidate high point areas all at the KY/TN State Line.
From the town of Hazel at the TN/KY State Line we drove west on State Line Road for 5.5 miles to a left turn on Kuykendall Road, 200 yards south we parked.
AREA 3 (furthest east area, 36.50156,-88.42503) is at 50 yards east in a harvested corn field, nothing obvious.
We continued driving 50 yards south where road turns west on the State Line and in 300 yards is AREA 2 and AREA 1. After checking out the area I concluded that there is one only HP here and that at a row of large oak trees on the State Line at GPS 36.50098,-88.42849.

WEAKLEY COUNTY HIGH POINT, TN. ... a short drive up
See Tom Owen TR for the driving directions. We drove to the HP which is now capped with a private buildings of sorts (garage, a covered sitting area and lots of scrap - looks very disorganized).

GRAVES COUNTY HIGH POINT, KY. ... a successful visit to Area 8 only, 1 mile, 20 minutes RT.
There are 8 candidate high point areas for this KY COHP and on this first visit I only went to Area 8 (just north of TN/KY State Line, 2 3/4 miles south of Rhoades Chapel),since it was very near the Weakley COHP.
I used the route described in Ken Oesers TR.
From the Weakley COHP it is 250 yards north on Jay Bird Lane to the woods road (Ken's Road) on the right. We parked here, this was my TH.
I walked the woods road northeast 400 yards to a cable gate (stayed left at first fork) with a number of signs, "No Trespassing", "This Property is under video surveillance". In another 300 yards stayed right at the second fork and in 150 yards arrived at the summit - a few yards to the right of the road. I chose my spot at the trees (36.50275,-88.59346).
I saw 2 white tailed deer and a large family of turkeys.

We found our way southwest to the town of Martin for the night. Took in the Denzel Washington movie "Fences", hard to understand most of the dialogue, oscar quality acting.
