Ascent Trip Report

This was the second hike on the day and in all I would honestly have to say that it was probably the most miserable time I ever had hiking. I'm not trying to discourage anyone who might want to hike this peak, but my experience was less than stellar. I brought my mountain bike along to ride the first 5 miles of the trail along a dirt road, but it was a lot of grass and mud, making the ride very difficult. Made it about 3.5 miles in on the bike and ditched it behind a tree to make the rest of the way on foot. Once leaving the road and heading onto the foot path, which was marked very well with a mixture of yellow and blue DEC markers and can tops painted red, it became a little more interesting. The trail itself is never very steep and would actually be pretty easy except for the distance (15.2 miles round trip). It started raining about half way up to the summit on the path and the deer flies were horrendous. Even riding the bike pretty quickly on the way back wasn't enough to escape them. The tower cab is locked and some very low lying clouds meant there was no view to be had anyways. Also, I only saw 2 people the whole trip and that was towards the beginning, so it was a lonely, buggy, rainy, and strenuous trip. On a nice day with a hiking buddy, I'm sure it would have been a much nicer hike, but I'm still glad I stuck it out. At least it gave me #17 in the Fire Tower Challenge.
