Ascent Trip ReportFrom I-90 just a few miles E of the WA/ID state line, I took exit 5 and turned S on Spokane St. Zero or note your odometer at the interchange. At 0.5-0.6 miles I crossed the Spokane River. At 1.0 miles the road turns 90° R at a junction where a side road goes L. Both roads at this junction are signed as W Riverview. At 2.7 miles I turned L (S) on Signal Point Rd, just after a white picket fence and just before a rust-colored picket fence. Just after this turnoff, a sign says the road is closed 2.8 miles ahead, and provides phone numbers 765-1414 and 772-9665 for access information. At 3.8 miles and 4.0 miles, the road makes a double switchback, first R then L. At 4.9 miles the pavement ends, and the gravel beyond is smooth and well-graded, fine for any street legal vehicle. At 5.7 miles the road ends at a locked gate. Signs on the gate prohibit ATVs, snowmobiles, or any "unauthorzed vehicles", but there is nothing to bar foot travel. A sharp L switchback goes to a private residence. The area just outside the gate is wide and there is plenty of space to park or turn around, but the area is thoroughly signed against parking. I therefore backtracked ¼ mile and parked at a wide spot to begin my hike.
A couple of minutes after the gate, I passed a facility on my L (a little uphill and partly hidden by trees) that I couldn't tell whether it was a residence or a storage facility. A couple of pickup trucks were parked near it. A couple of minutes after that, I passed a small side road on my L that went to a couple of residences, and I heard a dog bark as I walked by. Occasional numbers spray-painted on trees appeared to indicate the distance from the locked gate in kilometers, every half kilometer. Occasional signs inform hunters that only foot travel is allowed. Just past kilometer 5, I made a sharp R turn following an arrow on a small white circular sign; this is the junction at ~4450' about ½ mile ESE of the summit of Mica Pk. About 200' below the summit is another junction where you can turn either way, as the summit as plastered with a maze of roads that service the various radio facilities. I chose to turn sharp R following an arrow on a small white diamond-shaped sign. The highest ground is a 4½ foot boulder S of a brown corrugated metal shack. I found a witness mark in a concrete sidewalk on the SE corner of the brown corrugated metal shack, but it pointed straight into the shack, and I couldn't find the bench mark anywhere on the far side of the shack.
On my descent, I passed by several pickup trucks and a fellow out for a morning walk. All encounters were friendly and without incident.
