Ascent Trip Report

Despite the constant rain for the whole climb, this hike was more fun than Balsam Lake Mountain and Mount Tremper the day before. The trail itself is an old jeep road, which would appear to be still in use due to the communications tower located near the summit. The grade is moderate at best. We saw quite a few groups of people on the descent from camping up on the mountain overnight. At approximately 1.8 miles are the remains of an old hotel which were pretty cool. With the rain and the fog, there was a bit of a creepy vibe about the place, but not enough to prevent going all through it and taking some great pictures. The tower on the summit was shrouded in fog so much that it was difficult to see the cab on top from the ground. Not that we would have been able to see anything this day, but it was still disappointing that the cab was locked. It would have been nice to just get out of the rain while we ate lunch. Apparantly there's also a nice lookout at the end of a short trail behind the cabin, but again, the fog prevented any views. The walk back down was a quick one and the rain just kept coming to the point that we were drenched by the time we made it back to the cars. Still, it was a fun and interesting hike, and most likely my favorite of the summer so far. It was also #13 in the Fire Tower Challenge for me.
