Ascent Trip ReportOn a cold day in January 2003, my friend Roger Niesen and I decided to make a drive from Mercer, WI where we were staying up to the Minnesota arrowhead to nab Eagle Mountain the highest point in Minnesota. It was a really LOW snow year in the upper midwest and in fact we really didn't see much snow all the way from Northern Wisconsin and until we got to a higher elevation by the gunflint trail. There was more snow on the trail though (but not too much). We passed by Whale Lake and made our way up the steep path towards the summit being careful not to slide down and hurt ourselves. It was a pretty view from a few spots along the trail and it is still the only highpoint I've done in the dead of winter (as of 2009) It was challenging to find the trailhead as the roads weren't marked the greatest.
