Ascent Trip ReportNice trail, but it's paved with asphalt all the way. I personally prefer dirt trails, but this one is quite pretty with flowering plants everywhere; rhododendrons, I think. I hit this trail quite early in the morning, and I was absolutely by myself -- with the notable exception of a black bear I met along the way. I was quite startled when the bear came crashing down the hill to the left of the trail, and I did the one thing you're never supposed to do, I ran like heck, and fortunately, the bear didn't follow me. I probably frightened him as much as he frightened me, but you never know. At any rate, by the time I made it to the top, I was pretty much out of breath. The park ranger was just opening the museum when I arrived, and he seemed to know that I'd spotted the bear. It was the first thing he said to me. "Did you know we have a bear on the mountain?" I just nodded. I still couldn't even speak. Nice facility at the top, and you can actually take a bus up there from the parking lot below, which is what my husband did. I would go back there and hike again, but I'd want to have someone with me. Bears sort of freak me out. This is something I've got to come to terms with if I'm going to keep hiking up mountains.
