Ascent Trip ReportLOTS of people hiking up this paved trail. It's the high point in Tennessee, and it's in Smoky Mountain National Park, so it's easy to get to and fairly easy to hike. There are also public restrooms at the trail head. I thought the trail was pretty steep and not shaded. All the dead trees are disappointing to see. They say the trees died because of acid rain, so that's disturbing too. There's a circular ramp and an observation point at the top. Nice view except for the dead trees. Take a jacket, it can be quite cool and windy at the top, but you'll probably shed your jacket on the way down. Take some water too, but it won't take you long at all to make it to the top and back down. It's a short trail. I'd say a snack is totally optional. One word of warning; unless you're super-strong, you probably shouldn't plan on pushing someone in a wheelchair up the trail. I saw one woman doing that, and she was struggling mightily. It was a noble effort, but I don't think she made it very far. There are gentler trails in the park that are paved for wheelchair access. Check them out at the visitors' center.
