Ascent Trip Report3/17/2007 - After spending a week of vacation in beautiful Estero, FL. Amanda and I began our journey to Florida's Highpoint at 6:00 a.m. We left in good spirits even though we were embarking on an 8 hour drive from the southern tip of Florida to Lakewood Park in northwest part of Florida's panhandle. After several stops for gas and construction sites, we reached the Highest Point at 2:15 p.m. Located about a mile from the Alabama/Florida border on County Road 285, Lakewood Park is the lowest highpoint in the United States. There was another couple just leaving as we arrived, both highpointers who were traveling to Mississippi and Alabama the next day to do the highpoints as well. I tried to use the bathroom but the toilet was overflowing thanks to my flushing it, so I headed to the woods behind the facilities. Now one day I can tell my kids that I peed on Florida's Highest Point. Outstanding! The park had several buildings including a restroom, and a granite stone plaque indicating the highest point. It also had several hiking trails that led into the surrounding woods. We stayed for about 15 minutes, took some pictures, signed the logbook, which was in a wooden holder next to the map attached to the restroom, and continued our drive north towards Indianapolis. The plan: Alabama Highpoint and Mississippi Highpoint before home. We'll see. 5 Hours north to Alabama. - John
