Ascent of Mount Mansfield on 2008-10-04| Date: | Saturday, October 4, 2008 | | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | | Peak: | Mount Mansfield | | Location: | USA-Vermont | | Elevation: | 4393 ft / 1338 m |
Ascent Trip ReportBegan ascent from Whiteface Shelter on the Long Trail. Trail is a moderate climb most of the way up, though there is a bit of a scramble up near the summit. Snow was on the ground as well as the conifers. Beautiful, cold day. Foliage was top-notch. Lots of day hikers. Descent via the Forehead was somewhat more technical, but the GMC provides ladders. Overall, an exhausting day, and the hike would have been a lot nicer if it weren't for the sound of the gondola dropping herds of tourists off at the top. Reached Butler Lodge in the evening after 12.5 miles of hiking.
