Ascent Trip Report

This was a terrible bushwhack, of course, I did go up the hard way. I reached the summit by going up the west slope, which is the way a lot of people go down. I then descended via the north slope back down to the BRP. There really isn't any trail at all on the west slope. On occasion you can see evidence someone has been that way once upon a time but there is no trail...not even a manway. There is also a property line survey marker affixed to a cement post about .2 of a mile from the MST. Good luck finding it though, I just happened upon it. Other notes: There is an OLD logging road also about .2 of a mile from the MST. Of course, it follows the contour of the mountain and doesn't help much but I used it to get my back on course with the GPS file I downloaded from the Carolina Mountain Club website. If starting on the west slope, entering the woods where Bearwallow Creek crosses the MST is probably the best route. Many times I found that simply hiking in the creek on the up was easier than bushwhacking. Lots of slippery boulders though. Eventually the creek will disappear and you'll be on your own.
