Ascent of Flattop Mountain on 2009-07-14| Others in Party: | Tim Newman | | Date: | Tuesday, July 14, 2009 | | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | | Peak: | Flattop Mountain | | Location: | USA-Colorado | | Elevation: | 12324 ft / 3756 m |
Ascent Trip ReportThis was a great hike. The party that started out included 3 children, who made it within a quarter mile of the summit, and would have made the summit, if not for EXTREME wind conditions near the top, pushing the wind-chill well south of comfortable. The views from the trail were limited until the trail climbed above the tree line- then they were breathtaking. Aside from the potential for winds, hikers should also be warned that this is quite a popular trail- we went on a Tuesday and still saw dozens of others doing this hike.
One key benefit of this summit is it puts one within easy reach of about 5 other summits (assuming the weather is hospitable).
