Ascent Trip Report

This was a challenging but rewarding hike. The road in is dirt, but passenger car accessible.

Before you begin, remember to get a day use permit, now available online-

Once you begin, you need to climb over the gate and head up the peak just north of the road, passing a bit south of the summit (you will need to cross a barbed wire fence, but it is easy to go under and the bottom wire is not barbed. From south of that first peak, follow the ridge west to northwest. When you hit about 5600', you will see a nice trail (cattle-made?) heading north- take it! Follow that toward the main drainage north of Nugent Canyon, cross the canyon and follow the obvious ridge up. At some point here, you may find the ground very soft- head up to the top of that sub-ridge for firmer ground.

As you approach the main ridge, cross to the west side of it at about 7900'. On the far side, follow the ridge, dropping down just enough to stay below the rocks. When you can see the saddle just north of the main summit, go for it, then take that ridge to the summit. There is a bit of easy class 3 climbing towards the very top.
