Ascent Trip Report

Chris and I decided to get an early start based on the severe thunderstorm activity in Flagstaff the afternoon before our hiking day. This eventually proved to be a great decision given the formation of thunderheads over the summit while we were hiking down the mountain.

The summit was breezy and cool. We were pleasantly suprised to see the North Rim of the Grand Canyon roughly 60 miles to the Northeast. Although it was a long way away, you could still make it out. There were four other hikers on the summit when we left, however we passed nearly one hundred others who were headed up the mountain as we were headed down.

The trail was well defined with the exception of a couple areas immediately before and after the saddle. It also had many "boot catchers" in the form of rocks and tree roots which made for a few stumbles on the return trip.

As we expected, strong thundershowers pounded the area by early afternoon. My guess is there were several people on the trail hiking though some real nasty weather.
