Ascent Trip Report

Easy moderate hike.

The "massif de Monts-Valin", in Parc National des Monts-Valin north of Chicoutimi, is made up of numerous peaks such as Pic Dubuc the highest at 980 meters, Pic Bellevue, Pic de la Hutte, etc ........ none of which are called Mont Valin by the Park authorities.

PIC DUBUC, the highest in the Park is Peakbagger's MONT VALIN. The well maintained trail for hiking/skiing starts at a Refuge and after 2 km passes by another Refuge "le Fantome". The open summit is a beautiful large rock out-crop with a poured concrete slab on top of it, one corner engraved "23-10-74, PEG". I couldn't help but ask myself "Is this another example of Government waste?". The views I'm sure are outstanding but not on this day ..... drizzle, heavy overcast with some foggy patches and some pockets of clearing.

ACCESS TO THE PARK is from route #172 on the north side of the Saguenay river, east of Chicoutimi Nord just before you arrive at Saint Fulgence. It is signed "Parc des Monts-Valin, 17 km" ........ travel north to the Park Entrance/Information Center. The park offers a network of good hiking/skiing trails, information is available, there is a small daily users fee.

DIRECTIONS TO TH FOR PIC DUBUC AND PIC DE LA HUTTE.
From the Information Center travel on the gravel access road 10.8 km to the TH on your right for PIC DUBUC, sign reads "Vallee des Fantomes", there is a Refuge, a toilet and parking for a few vehicles.
On the way pass a road to the right, at 6.2 km from the Information Center ..... the sign reads "PIC DE LA HUTTE, 4 KM". Turn right up this road and travel/arrive at a large parking on the right side of the road. The TH is 300 meters up the road to the right at Lac des Pionniers. Everything is well signed.

"IN THE MOUNTAINS THE SHORTEST WAY IS FROM PEAK TO PEAK ...... BUT FOR THAT YOU MUST HAVE LONG LEGS."
