Ascent Trip ReportI was well on my way on a 9 state 5 highpoints tour to try to nap State Highpoints # 13-17. I reached Mt. Sunflower via a roller coaster gravel road that really surprised me. From other accounts it seemed that it would just be a flat as a pancake drive but it really was a quite pretty drive once I left US 40. It is a pretty bleak remote area as far as population goes. It was extremely windy at the summit marker area and I really enjoyed the extreme quiet so I could pore over the summit register while enjoying my supper. It had been in the 80s most of the way across Kansas but by the time I got to Mt. Sunflower the temp was down in the 60s. Must have been the elevation!! If you're ever crossing Kansas make sure to check out the Kansas State Capitol in Topeka. There was a really fun climb (you must go with a guide) all the way to the top of the capitol dome. If you get vertigo be careful once you get to the winding staircase. It made me quite dizzy and made the way up a little harder. It was a really a lot of fun and worth the time to exit and go make the climb. There's a great view from the top that overlooks the city of Topeka. I think tours to the top of the dome go out every half hour or so on weekdays but check ahead to make sure. Mt. Sunflower was my state highpoint # 13.
