Ascent Trip Report

I had previously been very interested in those little black triangles that showed up once on each page in the road atlas. The highest point of "X" State. I finally got to reach my first state summit in November of 2002 with my friend Roger Niesen. We were staying in Mercer, WI but ventured out one day to reach the highest point in Michigan (which is in Upper Michigan). We stopped at a shop in L'Anse to try to get better information on a route to the summit. Roger knew the guy in the sporting goods store from his work as a Sales Rep that traveled around to lots of these different sporting goods stores all over the upper midwest. He gave us directions and we headed off. There sure were a jumble of logging roads but eventually we found our way to a parking area and hiked up for about 1/2 mile to the summit. There's not a great view from the summit due to the dense foliage but it was satisfying to know that every person in the whole state of Michigan was below us!! Highpoint # 1. We headed back to the cabin in triumph.
