Ascent Trip ReportSame as South Fortuna Mountain
We did this hike in the evening to avoid the hottest part of the San Diego day. We started this hike from the eastern terminus of Claremont Mesa Blvd. Beware, there is now a large water management project on the west side of mission trails regional park which has led to the re-grading of many of the parks’ dirt roads, the presence of large equipment throughout the park, and trail closures during working hours Mon-Sat. Due to the lateness of our start we did not reach the summit of South Fortuna Mountain until sunset (~8:10). The road to the saddle between the Fortuna Mountains is somewhat steep and eroded, but this section last for no more than 0.5 miles. Despite the typically evening haziness I could spot all of the mission trails park peaks, Mt. Viejas, Mt. Helix, SDSU, and downtown (but no ocean). Overall the views were good, but would be excellent on a clear winter day. We tagged the summit of North Fortuna Mountain in dusk and descended to the car in darkness. This was no problem, however, as there was a half moon to navigate by. We saw rabbits but no other wildlife during the hike.
