Ascent Trip Report

This was a scheduled hike. My co- leaders were Pat Arredondo, George Christiansen, Pat Vaughn and Bruce Craig. Joining us was Peter Doggett, Miriam Khamis, and John Radalj. Hot Springs Mtn. use to be on the HPS list. It was delisted in 2005 due to access problem. It is on the Los Coyote Indian Reservation and we were having problems getting access. Things have changed and the Indian Reservation seems to be more open to hikers. There are some stipulations. You have to call ahead to make sure someone will be at the gate. There is a fee of $10/vehicle. You have to go in with 2 4WD vehicles and they have to come out
at the same time. You can drive within a quarter mile of the summit. The road is in good shape except for a few spots. You have to drive up via the Hot Springs Mtn. road. If you drive on any other road, it is considered off-road and the fee is $25/vehicle. If you don’t have access to 4WD, you can drive to the Los Coyote Campground and hike up Sukat road which meets Hot Springs Mtn. road. The hike is about 10 miles round trip and about 2000’ gain.
Today was very hot and hiking 10 miles was not a pleasant option. The guard was at the gate on time, we paid our fee, got the key (George had to leave his driver license) and drove up to the peak. At the summit is a large parking area. A few feet west of the parking spot is the old fire lookout. It is in bad shape and probably will not last much longer. This is not the HPS summit. The summit is about ¼ mile east of the parking lot. There is a good use trail to the summit. The summit block is a large boulder about 20 – 30 feet high. There was a register at the base of the summit. There was a class 3 route to the summit and we were all able to summit. On the summit we found a BM. The view from this mountain were spectacular. This summit is the high point of San Diego County. Out group was generally in favor of putting this back on the list. It will have to be voted on by the general membership of HPS.
On the way down, we decided to pick up a couple of PB peaks. The first was Pk 6400. We drove down the road about 8/10th mile and an old road on our right (east). We followed this faint road due north about 1/10th of a mile to the summit. It had an outstanding rock face that we walked up, well worth the short effort to reach it. We did not find a register or BM on 6400. Next was Corral BM. We continued down the road about 1 mile again to a faint road on our left (east). We followed this faint road to a ridge then headed northeast to the summit. On the summit we found a BM and a register.
We continued down the road to the gate, returned the key (got George’s license back) and head for our next bump, Eagle Rock. Eagle Rock is about 2 miles from the gate heading west on Los Coyotes Road. It is just a short distance off the road. Previous write up said how much it looked like an eagle and they were right. When you are facing it, looking south, it looks just like an eagle with its wings spread getting ready to take off.
After Eagle, it was too hot to due any hiking (100 degrees), so we decided to do a drive up to King BM. We headed south on 79 to Montagual Road (it is the entrance to a Boy Scout camp), turned left (east) and drove about 1 ½ miles on a dirt road to a junction with a sign post. The BM was right behind the sign post.

12:30 pm Eagle Rock Summit. 3520’+
12:45 pm Car. 0.8 miles round trip, 120’ gain, 30 minutes.
1:15 pm King BM. 3017’ Drive up.
Total for the day: 2.1 miles round trip, 590’ gain, 1 hour, 50 minutes.
