Ascent Trip Report

Solo Trip. Left Boulder 5am, drive w/o stopping arrived at Gate 730am. Road in good shape maybe 30mph, save the last couple miles (no snow). a 3 cars at Leavick ruin. 2 at gate. Met 14ers.com pmonday at gate, he wrote up tripreport at 14ers.com.

South face started just East of the Gate, snow down to the road, but very soft, so skinned up immediately, didnt get going until 8am. 1" New snow had fallen the previous evening, assumed the cloud cover prevented a significant radiation freeze. Steepened up at about 13000'. Snow had bonded very poorly, so was side slipping badly on skins. If could go straight up, generally skins held, otherwise lots of sidestepping on the traverse.

Rocks exposed below the saddle, had to weave through. Finally making the ridge, used gps to head for true summit, not obvious otherwise. Found 4 others at summit already, and met PMonday on simultaneous arrival at about 10am.

A020 stared the ski descent from summit was very nice, not really corn, but the new snow made turns. Rocks below the saddle scratched my bases several times, new snow hid some very near rocks. At about 12800' snow turned to mush. Had to have even stance, made turns gradual so skis didn't sink in the turns. Down at 1050am. Very tame slope, maybe max slope 30 degrees.

Thunder clouds let loose in drive back, starting 11am
