Ascent Trip Report

Finally found a couple of days to make the 3.5 hour drive up for my first visit to the Daks and the high peaks. We left around 5am, arrived at 8:30, rented our beat canister at the Loj (required) and took off up the standard trail. Weather was nice, mostly sunny with a breeze. The trail was pretty easy for the first mile and then slowly became steeper with more rocks and scrambling. We took the spur and headed up Wright, which based on other trip reports seems to have more wind than Algonquin and is colder. This definitely seemed true for us as this peak was much colder and windier than Algonquin. We hung out by a wind protected rock for a bit, then headed over the col and up to summit Algonquin. This summit was really great, felt nice and bare and alpine. Got a foot sense of altitude. We set up our sleeping pads and rested against a rock, taking in the sweet views of Colden, Gothics and Marcy while eating lunch. After this we headed down over Boundary Mtn and then Iroquois, both of which are attained by a much smaller and narrower trail that leads to some scratches from the shrubbery. We headed down the Algonquin peak trail down to Colden lake to a lean to to shelter for the night. (This was a Tuesday night but all of the lean tos were basically full! We had to search around for an hour to find an empty one. While these say they sleep 8, then only sleep 4 strangers comfortably and 6 family/friends tightly). It rained overnight and we started our next morning hike through Avalanche pass in the pouring rain. This lasted about 2 hours before breaking to perfect sunny day without clouds, which we enjoyed until the Loj, at which point it started pouring again! Overall a fairly strenuous hike to do with full overnight packs but very enjoyable! Will be back....next up Gothics
