Ascent Trip Report

Saturday, May 23rd: After filling out the climbing register started hiking from Timberline around 1:00 PM. Took the cat-tracks just east of the ski area boundary. Ascended up to 9,300 and set-up camp. Clear day, light breeze, super warm.

Sunday, May 24th: Woke at 1:45 AM and began climbing at 2:30 under a clear ski with not a breath of wind. Wore crampons and helmet out of camp. Passed two other groups and ended up the lead team. Roped up upon reaching hogsback, 3 on one rope, 4 on the other. Had a few navigation issues finding the exact bootpack to follow, only one of us had done the climb before. The route probably could have been done without following a boot-pack, but wanted to make sure we found the right chute up (the pearly gates were too iced over, according to previous trip reports, to use).

Reached the summit right before sunrise. Other groups joined us to watch the sun come up on the summit. Getting a little breezy at this point and with my bladder hose frozen I'm anxious to get headed back down.

One of the guided groups is using the chute we came up to descend. Figuring it might be a while we take the guide up on his suggestion to use the chute directly skiers left (east), just a few feet away. It is much steeper and icier. We down-climb much more gingerly than we came up. Being memorial day weekend it's pretty crazy below the chutes with multiple rope teams going up/coming down. We descent to camp and manage to only sustain one bruise/welt from a falling ice chunk.

After spending a good deal of time chipping the snow stakes out of the frozen snow we pack-up and head down. I spend the rest of the day snowboarding at Timberline (after two margaritas).

Great team of guys, 7 of us. I would def climb with again. Especially the two I had already climbed with on Rainier. Also, the three that I had done Florence Peak with as part of a climbing class (one being the instructor).
