Ascent Trip Report

A great 10k out and back trail run, mostly on fire roads.
Start at the Marvin Braude Gateway Park at the very south end of Reseda Blvd. Head onto the trailhead and up the first hill and at the first junction turn right on Mulholland fire road and at the next junction (about .25mi) turn left at the next junction which is Temescal Canyon Fire Road. Follow this for about 2 miles to Hub Junction. Continue south (or keep moving straight staying on the left most trail) this will now be the Backbone Trail and follow for just under .75 mile. Look for a well established single track trail that spurs on the left. There should be a sign there indicating the backbone trail. Follow this spur as it winds through the dense overhanging scrub for about .08 mile (about a 30-40 second run) Here's where it get a little tricky. Look for a faint mountain bike crossing, tracks going down hill to the right and a thin, overgrown trail on the left. Follow this trail on the left and it will wind upward though sticks and dry grasses. A few scrapes on the legs are to be expected. Watch for snakes on warm mornings. The trail will clear shortly as you approach the well marked peak. There's a survey marker at the top next to an iron pole. This should be about 3.8 miles from the start. There's no shortcut ridge crossing back to Hub Junction, head back down the way you came.
