Ascent Trip Report

We approached our trailhead from the south, driving about 26.5 miles of mostly decent dirt road from US-6 (NF-402 to NF-400). While I didn't drive it so I don't know the condition, one can arrive from the north- only 13 miles on NF-400 from US-50.

The spur road shown on the topo map is closed with large boulders blocking the base of it. From the top, a trail goes on a ways, but eventually one must do some annoying bushwhacking to get to the base of the mountain, where the brush fades out. From this summit, it looked as though Cottonwood Benchmark (the next peak north) was clearly taller, so we traversed over to get that one as well. From there, this summit (the middle one) looked taller. As expected, the summit(s) offered great views. We also enjoyed seeing quite a bit of large wildlife, given the short time we were there- several groups of large game, and four horses relaxing at a snow patch just north of the north summit.
