Ascent of Mount Norris on 2009-04-30
|Date:||Thursday, April 30, 2009|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||2579 ft / 786 m|
Ascent Trip ReportThe open rocky summit of this short hike rewards the hiker with an awesome 360 degree panorama, views of Belvidere tower, Jay peak to the North and Mansfield to the South West dominate. There is logging activity in this area. Deciduous forest on the lower slopes and evergreens on the summit. Highly recommended.
I scarried up a moose half way up, a lot of moose droppings on the trail, tons of it higher up.
Access to the summit is via a logging road and a well used trail which was somewhat hard to find .....the trail register was on the ground and not easily visible. The trail is easy to follow, some steep rock scrambling is required at a few rock outcrops as you climb the South-West ridge of the mountain.
DIRECTIONS TO AND DESCRIPTIONS OF THE TRAIL ( 2 1/2 hour round trip)
The TH is a logging road at the West side of rte #100, just past the entrance to the scout reservation, 2 miles North of Eden Mills or 6 miles South of rte #58 in Lowell.
The logging road leaves rte #100 heading West, immediately entering a maintenance gravel yard, turns right and then left as it leaves the yard, crossing a brook at .2 miles. The road follows the brook upstream (North) on an easy grade, the odd pink tape on trees marks the route.
At .7 miles the road reaches a clearing to the right (the Trail Register marked by pink tapes is at the North-East end of this clearing). Immediately to your right is an arrow nailed to a tree with pink tape - pointing the way to the Trail Register. A small cairn is at the side of the road where a narrow trail that leads to the Register. On this day the Trail Register was on the ground and unmaintained.
From the Register the trail enters the woods, it is well used and easy to follow, marked with the odd faded blue blaze, orange and pink tape.
