Ascent Trip Report

We me our annual trip back to Guadalupe Peak in April 2009. As expected, temps were in the 40s - 60s most of the time.

We began the hike from our campsite at the Pine Springs campground under clear skies and around 50°F at 8:10am.

There was a large group of people on the trail today as a 7th grade class from Wall, TX was on their annual hike of the mountain.

This year, I brought along a friend of mine, my sister, and my bro in-law. 2 of us had done the hike last year, but my sister and bro in-law had never done a hike like this before so we took it easy and made the summit in about 5 hours. We stopped just short of the top for lunch since I knew it would be windy at the summit.

At the summit, the views were spectacular as usual and I would guess the wind was a fairly constant 40mph with 50mph or so gusts.

The descent was fairly uneventful and the first 3 miles or so went by quickly. Winds were powerful just before the turn to the last group of switchbacks, probably gusts of 50mph. Coming down the last portion of switchbacks, and as usual, my legs became extremely fatigued and I was looking forward to being done. I took frequent breaks at this point.

We all made it down though, and looking forward to doing it again next year!
