Ascent Trip Report

Well this was interesting. Figured I would get Mount Kephart and Mount Ambler since I missed them a few years ago. Woke up to a nice cool morning at Bent Creek near Cosby. Put on my trail running shoes, as my hiking boots were still wet from the creek crossings on the Caldwell Fork Trail earlier in the week. I look out at Greenbrier Pinnacle and see a bunch of white stuff up high. Hmmm. Guess that is frost, I think. As we drive up Newfound Gap road, I realize that it is snow! Sure enough, it snowed above 4000' feet! Park at the Gap amidst people making snowmen. Odd. I tell the great explorer that, dry, the hike out to the Jumpoff and back should take me 2 hours. With the snow and ice? A bit more, I am sure. The hike out to Ambler was mostly mud for the first half mile, then it changed to ice and snow. Still not bad. As I got alongside Ambler, I bushwacked up to the top, mad at myself for not paying attention a few years ago. It is about 30 feet from the AT. On top I found some tracks in the snow so another hiker did the same thing. I kept going toward Kephart and saw the Jumpoff Trailhead sign. Perfect! A nice hike up and over Kephart and down to the Jumpoff. A bit slippery up there, but nothing to worry about with only about a 500' drop inches away...total time out and back, 2:20. Need to figure out how to download gpx files from my fitbit.
