Ascent Trip Report

Immediately across the road from Co 31 on 33 (the way to the access road up Haines Knob) is a road heading steeply uphill towards this peak. Eventually you bypass two houses and thereafter the road becomes a rough Jeep track. I parked about 1/6 of a mile from the hp coordinates on a bare almost tundra like plateau. I had to bushwhack through a bramble patch , then cross large rocks to a mostly bare flat top with strange large concrete blocks from some abandoned construction project. Hard to imagine what they were building up here.

On the way down one of the homeowners stopped me, irate that I was on his land. I apologized and pointed out that no where--either at the entrance to the road or anywhere along the way--was there any signage indicating private property or no trespassing. He replied,"That's the stupidest argument I've ever heard--it's private property and you're trespassing." I apologized and left.

West Virginia has far less public land than many neighboring states, and I"ve encountered more angry property owners in WVA than any other state. It's also a heavily armed state. Be careful here.
