Ascent Trip Report

After the McCulloch COHP we came here with the plan to do the Concho/Menard COHPs all in one trip, starting at the Communication Towers in Concho. This would not happen, I had to make to separate trips all as per this one only TR.
Both counties have 2 candidate high point areas. I had Bob Martin's TR of 2000 in my source of information

DRIVING DIRECTIONS
At the JCT 190/R2873 (abt 20 miles west of the town of Menard) we zeroed our odo.
00.0M ... we left hwy 190 north bound on the paved R2873.
08.1M ... turned right (east) onto Treadwell Lane (dirt).
09.1M ... Treadwell turns left. Straight (east) is Runge Ranch Road which leads to Round Hill. The original plan was to bag this one but time wouldn't allow it. I should note that in wet weather Treadwell may be a problem past this point.
13.4M ... pass gated entrance on left Bobby Dan Sorrell, #685 Sorrell Lane.
14.5M ... pass gated entrance on left, signed only Bobby Dan Sorrell Ranch, barn and corral can be seen at 200 yards.
14.8M ... gated entrance on left with a very good road, signed "MSO" and no other sign.
15.8M ... Concho/Menard County Line, 200 yards ahead are 2 Communication Towers. The tall Communication Tower is inside the ranch's fence, the fenced-in huge Tower with Satellite Dishes is outside the ranch fence.

CONCHO COHP .... a xcountry hike to 2 areas, 4.8 miles, 2:25 hours RT.

This county has 2 candidate high point areas, I went to both.
We parked at the huge tower with my TH at the gate for tall Communication Tower.
I hopped the gate and went xcountry 1.4 miles to AREA 1 (the east area), on route I climbed over an electrified fence, getting a good jolt (31.09039,-100.07972).
I walked the 2410' contour and came up with 2 spots for this areas.
AREA 1A (31.09002,-100.09076) ... a clump of trees, at the same area as the PB coordinates.
AREA 1B (31.09168,-100.08713)... 400 yds northeast of 1A at spot elevation 2413'.

From Area 1 I had planned to go to Menard County, so I continued southwest towards the Menard HP, at .5 miles I came to a N-S fence in Menard County (31.08598,-100.09648). Ahead was small sheds, out house and sheep (corral-like). I didn't feel secure to approach someone from this side, so I forgot about Menard.
I would find out later I could have continued.

I walked the N-S fence line north about 150 yards and found an opening under the fence, I slid under the fence and walked west .25 miles (still in Menard County), then northwest (back into Concho County) another .25 miles to AREA 2 (31.08983,-100.10268).

I backtracked/short-cutting my return, this time without a jolt.

MENARD COHP .. road and xcountry to 2 areas, 4.2 miles, 1:50 hours RT.

The county has 2 candidate high point areas.

We first drove back to 14.5M Marker "Bobby Dan Sorrell Ranch". I hopped the gate and walked west to the barn, behind the barn are 2 trailer homes with no one home, grazing cattle 50 yards further west. I called out a number of times and in doing so got an answer from the cattle and I ended-up being a Pied-Piper .... they followed me back to the gate.

With Rose's insistence I decided to walk inside the ranch, "All they can do is give you shit and say no."
We parked at the gated entrance "MSO", 14.8M MARKER.

I hopped the gate and walked the good road westerly for 1.3 miles to a locked gate at an E-W fence line. !!! The place I turned around from the Concho side (above) is just 250 yards north of here !!!
From the gated entrance the road make 4 sharp turns and it is 2 miles to the locked gate, on-route there are 3 latched gates. I short-cutted 2 corners so I probably walked 1.75 miles.

At the locked gate I could see sheep and corral-like area, and my guess is that there must be a house further west. I called out with no answer so I decided to proceed.

From the locked gate I went west on the fence line .2 miles to AREA 2 (31.08374,-100.09982), then southwest .3 miles to AREA 1 (31.08003,-100.10292).
I short-cutted my return to the road then backtracked to the TH (I estimate my return at less than 2 miles).

We drove to San Angelo for the night after a too-long-tough-day for these old folks.
