Ascent Trip ReportPoints 1 and 2: I measured the gravel road 5.6 miles from US259. An interesting note on this one - if you go in the way Jerry Brekhus did per his cohp.org TR, you do not pass any posted signs. If you climb up from the road to the point farthest west, then take the overgrown road to the "more substantial communication equipment", the first notice you would see is on the fence surrounding the FAA radar. There is a scenic overlook just east of the FAA gravel road where I parked.
Points 3 and 4: I noticed the rock outcrops at about mile 8.3-8.5 from 259. There is another scenic overlook at mile 8.6. I parked there and followed the signed Dwarf Oak Trail, which wound through the forest and up to the ridge. By using this trail and then walking over rock, you may be able to avoid the thorns entirely. I did not avoid them - and they are no fun: sturdy, thick, damaging thorns. I wore jeans and they shredded right through them. I had many fairly deep scratches in my legs and on my arms and actually had thorn tips in a couple of fingers for the rest of the trip. Nasty!
Points 5 and 6: More thorns. I did not entirely avoid them at this location either.
