Ascent Trip Report

We set out around 5am for a standard, winter ascent of Mount St. Helens under clear skies with stars still showing. With the recent storms, there's snow to the base of the mountain in cougar and we departed in snowshoes though the trail was firmly packed under the tree line. Passed over swift creek still in the dark with a shadow of the mountain above and began the climb up in good conditions. As the sun broke, the sky was clearly clouded over but we did have some views of the false summit and crater rim far above briefly. We followed the boot pack around the gorge and up the ridge line with the permit signs still visible though deeply covered.

Unfortunately snow predictions for the afternoon came to fruition early in the morning and progressively worsened as the clouds moved in. Shortly after passing the weather station, we decided to turn around and descended in near whiteout marking a few tricky spots as we descended.

Overall the route is in amazing condition, easy to follow, plenty of snow to skin / shoe the entire way up.
