Ascent Trip Report

We followed the standard ascent route, leaving from the Upper Works Rd. trailhead just before 7am. The bridge over the Hudson and the reroute around Lake Jimmy kept my feet dry for a while besides a few minor missteps into the mud, until reaching the Opalescent River. The water was cold but not terrible, and with trail runners and neoprene socks, my feet were relatively dry and warm soon after. Once we reached the falls at the base of the stream, it was all uphill from there; gradual at first but then becoming pretty steep once you reach the slide. Be very careful along the slide because the slime is very slippery in sections. We reached the summit just before noon, taking almost exactly 5 hours to ascend, and then spent about an hour on the summit, before heading back. I saw on other reports that there are no views from the summit, but that is not true. Slightly obscured on the summit, but just before and just past it are some perfect views. The return trip took just over 4.5 hours, with us getting back to the trailhead at 5:30pm.
