Ascent Trip Report

This was a scheduled 2 day hike in the Anza-Borrego State Park. My co-leaders were Merlen Mertz and Ginny Heringer. Joining us was Sue Phores, Carol Da-Cruz, Valeria Pelona, Pat Vaughn, Bruce Craig, Laura Franciosi, and Bill Faulkner. Wilson was Bruce’s Lower Peak’s List Finish. On 10/24 we did the Lower Peak Wilson and two Peakbagger peaks, Pinyon Ridge and Don. For Wilson, we went in from the Old Wilson Rd. just past Ranchita. The road in has definitely improved. A high clearance vehicle can make it all the way to the start of the trail. We park about a mile short because we had a 2WD vehicle and we weren’t sure of the road. A 2WD vehicle could probable mad it all the way. The trail was easy to follow. It is an old jeep road. On the way back we picked Pinyon Ridge and Don. Pinyon had a class 3 summit block. There was a register on the summit block. Don was a short walk. It was marked by spade and the BM was on the boulder next to it. We spent the night at the Borrego Palm Canyon campground.
The next day we did Ghost Mtn. which is in Blair Valley. On this hike it was just the 3 leaders and Laura. It is about a 5 mile dirt road drive to the trailhead for Ghost. The road was signed and in good condition. Any 2WD vehicle could make it. The trail to the Marshal South ruins was in excellent shape and easy to follow. The summit for Ghost is about ½ mile past the ruins. It is basically XC to the summit with little gain but lots of cholla. Be careful where you walk. Ghost is being considered for an addition to the Lower Peaks list. After Ghost, I did the 3 BM solo. Quake was a tough one, It was short and steep, again with lots of cholla. I didn’t find any register or BM. Rich was just a walk across the desert floor. I don’t think I would have every found it without the GPS. There was a register, but no BM. Seyer was a little south of Blair Valley. It was a short walk with little gain. I parked in a turn out just before it.
