Ascent Trip Report

After a cold, windy night at Madulce Saddle we left camp at 7:35A for our two peaks of the day, continuing on the Big Pine Rd. By the time we had dropped down about 600' to the divide between Alamar Canyon and the Sisquoc River, site of the old Alamar Station. the foggy cloud above us had disappeared and we continued in sparkling, sunny weather, although it was still brisk and breezy. In another 2 miles we left Big Pine Rd for the old jeep trail on the left that leads to the broad summit area of forested Big Pine Mountain (9:45A). No view from Santa Barbara County's HP. After a short break we hiked via a Frank Goodykoontz shortcut over to the Mission Pne Tr and the real culmination of our trip, the more interesting West Big Pine Mountain (11:00A). The view was superior on this particularly clear day, taking in the Channel Islands, the Big Three, the Sisquoc country, McPherson Peak, Cuyama Peak, and the Mt. Pinos area. Back at the Madulce Saddle by 2:30P, we moved on down to spend our second night, again windy with freezing temperature, at Chokecherry Spring (5,500').

I had touted Big Pine Mountain as my 100th HPS peak, but shortly after the trip I was reviewing my HPS peaks and found that I had forgotten about several peaks years ago. So it turns out that Rabbit Peak #1 was my 100th HPS peak and Big Pine Mountain is instead my 107th.
