Ascent Trip Report

2016 Update: It appears that my party can claim the first ascent of the newly christened Oglala Lakota County! No matter that the highpoint and county boundaries have not changed since it was Shannon County...

Original Report: We turned off of the highway headed toward Oglala from Pine Ridge at the intersection with three cemeteries. We had just visited the Wounded Knee Massacre site as recommended by Howard and Mitchler. It was pretty sad, seeing as there was no federal government marker of the event, and only a potentially modified state-placed sign. Anyway, the road to the highpoint was easily driveable in a Corolla. The dirt was hard packed and there weren't many rocks. We crossed the cattle gate at 0.8 miles and then drove through a heard of cattle once we got close to the top. We overshot the highpoint and had to turn around. There is a cattle gate that leads to a road that goes SE from the main road and this is where we parked. There are two tractor tires bounding the cattle gate that read "Sober Up" and "Cadilac Raach" (yes it is misspelled). We thought that it should say "Cattlelack Ranch". Anyway, we walked up from the inside of this cattle gate and didn't have to cross a gate at all. It was just open tall grass. About halfway up I picked up Katrina because the grasses were making her legs itch. I carried her all the way to the top where we found we had to cross a fence because the benchmark BELL was three feet away on the other side. We enjoyed the views of rolling hills and got a glimpse of sand hills to the south. I carried Katrina half the way back, but we found a cattle trail that was wider this time so we didn't have to brush against so many grasses. This was Luke's first county highpoint that he had done intentionally. He's hiked a number of mountains in Oregon and Washington that are on the list as well, though.
