Ascent Trip Report

Rose and I are back to WV in our quest to complete the state's COHPs. We made the long beautiful drive south yesterday, the colors just about at their peak, except south of the Mason-Dixie Line (perhaps 2 weeks behind). Today we took in a 3 peaks in VA before moving to WV, all as per this one only TR.

A drive up per Michael Schwartz's TR. We stomped around the apple orchard to ensure the HP. We moved-on to the near-by Round Hill.

ROUND HILL ... A woods track with a bushwack , less than 1M, 35 minutes RT.
From the Winchester City High Point we went back to Fox Drive (CR #767) and drove south on Fox Drive to Hwy #50 (Amherst Road), where we went west on #50 for 2.5 miles to a right turn on Poorhouse Road (CR #654), .5 miles north turned left on Skyview Lane. Just as we were about to enter the Lane, a car was driving out, the 2 ladies in the car owned the home at the end of the Lane. They had no problem with us driving up to the house.
We drove the .4 mile lane and parked before the house at about 1100' elevation. A woods track heading northwest climbs the slope .25 miles to the north ridge, here I turned left and bushwacked southerly along the narrow rocky ridge 250 yards to the summit. Some view through the trees, its best to visit this one after the foliage.
We returned to #50 and continued west.

PINNACLE ... a moderate road climb with a tough wack at the summit, 4 miles, 2:10 hours RT.
I used Don Desroisers approach from the west side, but somewhat a different route.
From the junction of #50/#259 just west of Gore, we drove southwest on #259 for 13.5 miles to a left turn on Capon Springs Road (CR #16), 3 miles southeast turned left on Black Creek Road (this CR starts out as #16-2 becomes #23-3), 2 miles northeast came to the first Power Line (west), 300 yards further-on is a second Power Line (east) which appears to be the newer of the 2 .... these 2 Power Lines parallel each other, coming together on the summit ridge just west of the Communication Tower (HP).
When looking southeast from the road at the west Power Line right-of-way, the 2 Power Lines can be seen on the ridge. And when looking southeast from the road at the East Power line right-of-way, you can see the Communication Tower at the HP.
In between these 2 Power Lines is Capon Woods Resort Road (CR#964) which climbs southeast .8 miles to a dead-end at about 1650' elevation. We parked here, this was my TH.
From the TH I walked the woods 200 yards east to the east Power Line right-of-way with a good service tracks ... my route to the summit, clearly seen on the satellite image.
I followed the road southerly , going under the west Power Line, as it climbs and attains the main ridge at about .3 miles west of the Power Lines (I ignored 2 lesser road to the left). I estimate the distance from the TH at 1.1 miles.
I stayed on the main road and continued easterly for 300 yards on the south side of the ridge, where a good road on the left climbs to the ridge and in 300 yards is back to the Power Line right-of-way. From here I stayed on the road as it makes a switch-back on its ways along the north side of the ridge to the Communication Tower (.6 miles from the Power line right-of-way or 2 miles from the TH).
The high ground area is very dense and full of mountain laurel/oak scrub, the odd animal path. Moving around, looking for State Line, "the" HP and the BM, is difficult, no fun and time consuming. I gridded the area, gave it my best effort and called it good after 30 minutes. I did not find the BM, Wayne Snyder is one tough hound dog.
I ascended in 65 minutes, backtracked in 35 minutes.

We moved on to Elkins, WV.
