Ascent Trip ReportDriving up early this morning from Cambridge, four of us arrived at Crawford Notch for an overnight backpack to climb several peaks on the flanks of Mt. Washington, although there was little prospect of climbing Mt. Washington itself considering our time constraints. From the TH (1,900') near Willey House on NH 302 we took the Webster Cliff Tr up the cliffs overlooking Crawford Notch. From Mt. Webster (3.3 miles) the trail dipped a few hundred feet before resuming the demanding (Class 2+) climb to Mt. Jackson (4.7 miles). We continued to the AMC Mizpah Springs Shelter (6.4 miles, 3,600'), where we spent the rest of the afternoon and the night, protected from persistent but intermittent rain. Fortunately, we had the "comforts" of the shelter to ourselves. There was no letup in sight for the rain the next day; so we reluctantly but wisely cancelled our ambitious plan to hike from Mizpah Springs up the Crawford Tr to Mt. Washington and back to the car. So we packed up and headed down, somewhat damp, on the Mizpah Cut-ff and Crawford Path to Crawford Notch.
